HOR-TWG Holds Benchmarking Activity on the Establishment of the Philippine Space Agency in Japan

04 September 2017 TOKYO —The House of Representatives-Committee on Government Reorganization-Technical Working Group for the Creation of the Philippine Space Agency and the Department of Science and Technology conducted a benchmarking activity in Japan from August 25 to 26.
The Philippine Delegation was composed of Representative Christopher V.P. De Venecia (4th District of Pangasinan, Head of the HOR-TWG), Representative Seth Frederick P. Jalosjos (1st District of Zamboanga del Norte, Vice Chairperson of the Committee on Appropriations), Dr. Rogel Mari Sese (Program Leader of the National Space Development Plan), Ms. Maritess Pempena (Committee Secretary of the House Committee on Government Reorganization), Second Secretary Cassandra B. Sawadjaan and Mr. Louie A. Belleza of the Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines in Japan.
The activity involved official meetings with H.E. Mr. Jose C. Laurel, Philippine Ambassador to Japan, senior officials of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), Professor Yukihiro Takahashi of Hokkaido University and Filipino scientists and engineers involved in the Philippine Microsatellite Project (PHL Microsat). The delegation also had a study tour of JAXA’s Tsukuba Space Center in Ibaraki Prefecture.
The objective of the study mission was to provide key legislators with first hand information about Japan’s aerospace exploration activities which will advance proposals in Congress to establish the Philippine Space Agency, the primary agency responsible on space exploration operations and related activities. These proposed legislations will also create the Philippine Space Development and Utilization Policy, which will serve as the Philippines’ primary strategic roadmap for space development.
