Jakarta Sentro Rizal Lecture Series 2017: Life and Art in the Philippines in the 18th and 19th Century

05 September 2017 JAKARTA – Ambassador Jose Maria Cariño, a career diplomat and an art and history researcher, was Sentro Rizal Lecture Series speaker in Jakarta on August 30, at the Philippine Embassy in Jakarta as part of the Sentro Rizal program of the Philippine Embassy in Jakarta in cooperation with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

The lecture entitled, “Life and Art in the Philippines in the 18th and 19th Century,” was attended by 50 members of the Filipino community and Embassy as well as Philippine Mission to ASEAN personnel. The Embassy and Filipino community were so delighted to join Ambassador Cariño through memory lane back to the 18th and 19th century of Philippine life as defined by the works of renown Filipino artists. The lecture ignited fresh appreciation of the arts and at the same time understanding the richness of Philippine history way back then.

Institut Kesenian Jakarta (IKJ) (Jakarta Arts Institute) hosted Ambassador Cariño at their Visual Arts Auditorium. The lecture aimed to help enhance the understanding by young generation Indonesians about the evolution of Philippine Arts as part of ASEAN community. Ambassador Cariño introduced similarities in arts which reflect in the culture of both countries, the Philippines and Indonesia, as brothers or neighbors. The audience of more or less 300 faculty members and students of Visuals Arts of the institute listened intently and participated in the lecture which lasted more than two hours. END
