ASEAN Films to be Shown on Cambodian Primetime TV; Pacquiao Biopic is Philippine Feature Film
Philippine Ambassador to Cambodia, Christopher B. Montero (standing at the podium), delivers his remarks at the press conference held for the ASEAN Film Festival in Cambodia.
15 September 2017 Phnom Penh - Eight feature films from ASEAN countries will be shown on primetime television in Cambodia during the ASEAN Film Festival this month as part of commemorative activities for the 50th anniversary of the founding of ASEAN.
Philippine Ambassador to the Kingdom of Cambodia Christopher B. Montero and H.E. Mao Ayuth, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Information of Cambodia, led ASEAN Ambassadors and officials of the Cambodian government in the official launching of the Film Festival at a press conference held on August 30 in Phnom Penh.
Organized by ASEAN Embassies in Phnom Penh and the Ministry of Information of Cambodia, the film festival marks the first time that movies from ASEAN countries will be shown in Cambodia nationwide simultaneously on two TV stations -- TVK and TV5. Cambodians will have the chance to watch a different ASEAN movie each night from September 08 to 15.
"Instead of public lectures and seminars, which cater only to a select group of people, the ASEAN Embassies chose to organize this type of activity to reach out and connect with as many Cambodians as possible, including those in rural areas. This is a unique opportunity for Cambodians to get a glimpse into the lives of their fellow ASEAN citizens," Ambassador Montero said during the press conference attended by about 100 representatives from media outfits in Cambodia.
Films of various genres have been chosen to entertain, inform, and inspire the Cambodian audience. The Philippine entry is a biopic of Manny Pacquiao, who has a huge following in Cambodia. Produced by Star Cinema and Ten17 Productions, "Kid Kulafu" shows the challenges that Pacquiao had to overcome before becoming a professional boxer.
"Through the film festival, we hope to increase understanding and appreciation among Cambodians of each ASEAN country's culture and values, thereby contributing to efforts in forging a common ASEAN identity," Ambassador Montero concluded. END
