25 September 2017 CHICAGO – Consul General Generoso D.G. Calonge met with Congresswoman Janice Schakowsky on September 20 at her district office in Glenview who is serving her tenth term in office representing the Ninth Congressional District of Illinois.
Consul General Calonge thanked Rep. Schakowsky for her unstinting support to the Filipino American community and Philippine issues and causes through her continued membership in the US-Philippines Friendship Caucus.
Given the fact that there are more than 20,000 Filipinos and Filipino Americans residing in her district, the largest concentration among the 18 congressional districts in the State of Illinois, the two officials spoke candidly on matters relevant to their constituencies.
Consul General Calonge also conveyed a request for the Jewish Congresswoman to lend her voice to ongoing efforts to have the late President Manuel L. Quezon formally recognized for his heroic deed that saved the lives of more than 1,200 Jews during the Holocaust. A quiet campaign was kicked off by a Noel “Sonny” Izon documentary film on the rescue of Jews by Pres. Quezon that was screened at the Holocaust Museum and Education Center in Skokie in 2015.
Both officials looked forward to enhancing the excellent and close working relations between their offices. END
