PH Envoy Closes 61st General Conference of IAEA with Resolution on the DPRK Issue

26 September 2017 VIENNA - Ambassador Maria Zeneida Angara Collinson, Philippine Resident Representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency, closed the 61st General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on September 22 in Vienna, Austria with a resolution condemning the six nuclear tests conducted by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), including the latest on September 03. 

The Philippines joined 74 other Member States in co-sponsoring the resolution with Canada. Adopted by consensus, the Resolution calls on the DPRK to comply with the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council, come into full compliance with the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), cooperate fully with the IAEA in the implementation of comprehensive safeguards, and cease all its nuclear activities, including the building of its nuclear forces.

Ambassador Angara-Collinson was elected president by acclamation by the 169 member states of the IAEA.  She presided over the Conference which lasted 5 days and which passed 11 resolutions on various aspects of nuclear power – verification, safety, safeguards, security, science and technology and peaceful applications.

The 61st IAEA General Conference was attended by one Head of State, one Vice President, thirty-three Ministers, ambassadors, scientists and experts. Ambassador Angara Collinson is the first Filipino female diplomat to be elected President of the IAEA. END
