Philippine Embassy Showcases Philippine Culture and Music to New Zealand Students

05 October 2017 WELLINGTON - The Philippine Ambassador to New Zealand, Ambassador Jesus. S. Domingo, delivered a presentation on Philippine Culture before elementary and middle school students Sacred Heart Cathedral School, Wellington, New Zealand on August 25.
Ambassador Domingo gave an overview of the history and culture of the Philippines, noting the significant people and events that shaped the country. He also highlighted the many qualities and traits that make Filipinos a loving, diverse versatile and resilient people.
To introduce Filipino music to the students, Mr. Janryll Fernandez, Senior Communications Adviser of Asia New Zealand Foundation and an active member of the Filipino community in Wellington, showcased the Angklung, a native instrument made out of bamboo tubes. Students were taught how to play the bamboo instrument, and were given the opportunity to try out various tunes, including Kiwi folksong “Tutira Mai” and Filipino folksongs “Magtanim ay Di Biro” and “Leron Leron Sinta”.
The event is part of the Philippine Embassy in Wellington’s extensive line-up of projects aimed at acquainting Kiwis with Philippine Culture and Heritage. END
