ASEAN Ambassadors in Mexico City Donate to Mexican Red Cross for Earthquake Victims

11 October 2017 MEXICO - The ASEAN Committee in Mexico City, consisting of the resident ASEAN Ambassadors in Mexico, visited the Mexican Red Cross (Cruz Roja Mexicana) to deliver a donation for the victims of the recent earthquake that struck Mexico on September 19.

Philippine Ambassador to Mexico Eduardo Jose A. de Vega, along with the Ambassadors of Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam, met with Director-General José Antonio Monroy Zermeño and handed him a donation of 50,000 Mexican pesos (about USD 3,000.00) as the combined contribution from the ASEAN Embassies for the earthquake rehabilitation and recovery efforts.

Director General Monroy Zermeño was most appreciative of the ASEAN Ambassadors´ gesture and spoke of the Red Cross’ work throughout Mexico and in Southeast Asia. He likewise informed them that the Mexican Red Cross is distributing three tons worth of relief goods to the victims of the earthquake, and the organization is now concentrating their works in the badly-affected states of Oaxaca and Chiapas. At present, the death toll from the earthquake has reached a total of 366. END
