13 October 2017 HONOLULU – The Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu organized a presentation by the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency (HEMA) on the North Korea nuclear missile threat to Hawaii on October 10.

The presentation was conducted by Mr. Vern Miyagi, HEMA Administrator, and Maj. Gen. Arthur Logan, HEMA Director, and Adjutant General, Hawaii National Guard.

The briefing was attended by members of the Hawaii Consular Corps, Filipino media and Filipino community.

The HEMA characterized the North Korea missile threat as “unlikely, but a possibility.” Therefore, they urged the public to be prepared.

Key points of the nuclear preparedness briefing:

  • When the Attack-Warning siren is activated, all residents and visitors must immediately seek shelter in a building or other substantial structure. Once the sirens sound, residents and visitors will have less than 12 to 15 minutes before missile impact.
  • The public needs to prepare a disaster kit good for two weeks or 14 days. This is for all types of disasters, including the nuclear attack, which could disrupt marine transportation or delay incoming supplies to the islands.
  • There are currently no fallout shelters in Hawaii. The short 12 to 15 minutes warning time would not allow residents or visitors to locate such a shelter in advance of missile impact. Therefore, HEMA advises to identify possible shelters in advance, such a buildings.
