20 October 2017 HONOLULU - Now on its third year, classes for the Ilocano Language Acquisition and Immersion for the New Generation (iLAING), commenced at the Filipino Community Center in Waipahu, Hawaii on October 14. More than twenty students signed up for the classes.
iLAING is an integrated Ilocano program consisting of two parts: (1) the Ilocano language learning consisting of lessons held every Saturday afternoon for three months, or from October to January 2018, focusing on specific key result areas in Ilocano language learning as a heritage and a second language and wherein students aim to obtain a Level One proficiency in Ilocano oral communication; and (2) the Ilocano language exposure and immersion to the Philippines to be undertaken by top five students of the language class, which consists of field programs and cultural exchanges in the Philippines.
iLAING is a collaborative effort of the Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu, the Filipino Community Center, the Candonians of Hawaii, the United LaoagueƱos of Hawaii and the University of Hawaii Ilocano Program. Major sponsors and partners include the Philippine Airlines (PAL) and Western Union. It aims to empower the young Filipino Americans in Hawaii, between the ages 18 to 25, to take pride in their culture and roots, through the use of language.
Classes for iLAING are also open to non-Filipinos, and those who are over the age of 25. For the first time since it started in 2015, iLAING classes are free, thanks to the grant given by the City and County of Honolulu for cultural programs of the Filipino Community Center. END
