20 October 2017 MEXICO – The ASEAN Committee in Mexico City (ACMC) conducted an official visit and aerospace roadshow in the Mexican state of Querétaro on October 12, meeting with government officials and research institutions to promote ASEAN trade and investment as part of the activities to highlight the 50th ASEAN Anniversary.
The ACMC, which is currently chaired by Malaysian Ambassador Mohamad Azhar bin Mazlan, includes the five resident ASEAN Ambassadors in Mexico, namely: Philippine Ambassador Eduardo A. de Vega, Indonesian Ambassador Yusra Khan, Thai Ambassador Rommanee Kananurak, and the Vietnamese Embassy represented by Charge d’Affaires Dong Tuan Anh.
Also in attendance during the visit were the respective trade attaches of each ASEAN embassy, including Philippine Commercial Counsellor Vichael Roaring.
The ACMC first met with the Aerospace Director and the General Director of the Center for Engineering and Industrial Development (CIDESI), a public research center that is part of the network of research centers managed by the National Council of Science and Technology of Mexico (CONACYT). The meeting participants shared sectoral industry profiles, best practices, and explored possible areas of bilateral and multilateral collaboration between ASEAN and Mexico in the aerospace value chain. The CIDESI officials invited ASEAN countries to discuss projects for cooperation.
The ACMC then met with Querétaro State Governor, Hon. Francisco Domínguez Servién, who expressed his administration’s willingness to collaborate with the ASEAN Ambassadors and Trade Representatives in key industries of automotive, aerospace, biotechnology.
Aside from discussing Querétaro’s historic importance in Mexico’s independence movement from Spain in the early 19th century, Governor Dominguez noted the numerous advantages that Querétaro has for foreign investors, including stability, rule of law, and labor peace (no militancy among laborers). The state government invited each ASEAN Embassy to send business delegations to fully explore the trade and investment potential that Querétaro offers.
Lastly, the ASEAN Ambassadors had a roundtable session with officials of the Aeronautical University of Querétaro (UNAQ), Latin America’s leading autonomous training and development institution in aerospace. Aside from a briefing on the institution, UNAQ shared their ongoing collaboration with Malaysia on training and development projects and stated their interest in undertaking similar cooperation projects with other ASEAN countries.
Querétaro is Mexico’s main aerospace manufacturing hub, with over 30 aerospace companies choosing to locate their operations in the state. These firms include Airbus, Delta, Bombardier, GE IQ, Safran, Eurocopter, and several more.
In recent years, Querétaro has grown at thrice the rate of the country as a whole, and was named one of the top places to do business in the Americas in 2015 and 2016, according to the Financial Times. Aerospace, automotive, information technology, home appliances, and food production are the five main industries with a presence in Querétaro. END
