26 October 2017 VIENNA — Deputy Chief of Mission Sulpicio M. Confiado, receives the Diploma conferred on Arvie Orpeda, a Filipino grade VI student of Melencio M. Castelo Elementary School in Quezon City, by the Peace and Cooperation and the UN Office on Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) for his entry in the Poster and Motto category of the 2017 Peace and Cooperation School Award.
Organized by the Peace and Cooperation in collaboration with the United Nations Office of Outer Space Affairs, the Peace and Cooperation Award School Award is an annual arts competition which aims to raise awareness about global social topics and how exploration of space can bring benefits to humankind. This year’s general theme is “Watching the Stars: The Future of the World.”
For the Poster and Motto category, Arvie and eleven other school children from Latvia, Bulgaria, Spain, Slovakia and Mexico, impressed the international jury for their interpretation of the topic:
“For half a century, the UN, through the Office for Outer Space Affairs, has looked at the fact that all the world inhabitants should enjoy the benefit of space, including veiling these issues so as to use the outer space in a pacific matter. What do you think are the contributions that spatial science and technology give to the amelioration of human condition.”
Arvie’s recognition came in an opportune time as this year marks the 60th anniversary of the launch to outer space of Sputnik I as well as the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies.
The other categories of the competition are Free drawing Poster and Motto; Mural or Collective Work, Free Composition, and the Extraordinary Prize Yuri Gagarin. END
