03 November 2017 LOS ANGELES – The Consulate General in Los Angeles represented by Consul General Adelio Angelito S. Cruz attended the 8th Larry Itliong Day held at the Veterans Park in the City of Carson, CA on October 21.  The event is part of a month long celebration of Philippine American History Month in Carson, California.

Larry Itliong was a Filipino-American farm labor union leader who led a Filipino strike of Coachella Valley grape growers resulting in the payment of higher wages in 1965. In the same year, he led a walkout of 1,500 Filipino grape pickers and began the Great Delano Grape Strike protesting low wages and miserable working conditions.

The renowned labor leader, Cesar Chavez joined him later that year.  In 1966, Larry Itliong and Cesar Chavez formed the United Farm Workers Organizing Committee, which later become the United Farm Workers of America, one of the greatest unions in American history.

The City of Carson, CA is the first city in the Americas to recognize October 25 as Larry Itliong Day, through City Council Resolution No. 20-108. On 01 December 2014, California State Assembly member Rob Bonta introduced AB 7 establishing October 25 as Larry Itliong Day in California and was signed by Governor Jerry Brown on 30 June 2015. END
