06 November 2017 BRASILIA — As part of its Gender and Development Program and in observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, also known in Brazil as Outubro Rosa (Pink October), the Philippine Embassy in Brasília, Brazil held a seminar on breast cancer awareness and prevention for the Filipino Community in Brasília at the chancery on October 29. The seminar was attended by members of the Filipino Community, mostly women, and some Brazilian guests.

Dr. Lucia Ishii, a noted Brazilian oncologist and the founder of the Cancer Patients Association of Brasília, gave an hour-long presentation about the early detection, evaluation and treatment of breast cancer.

In his opening remarks, Chargé d’affaires, ad interim Ariz Severino V. Convalecer mentioned that it was important to raise breast cancer awareness among Filipinos. He cited data from the Philippine Obstetrical and Gynecological Society indicating that in 2016, the Philippines topped 197 countries with the most number of breast cancer cases.  He also stressed that breast cancer is a disease which afflicts women and men. To raise breast cancer awareness among men, the third week of October was proclaimed Male Breast Cancer Awareness Week in 2009. END
