08 November 2017 AGANA – Philippine Consul General to Guam Marciano R. de Borja invited Office of Civil Defense/Guam Homeland Security (GHS) Advisor George Charfauros, Jr. to give a briefing last November 06 at the Philippine Consulate General on missile defense systems that are in place in the event of an imminent missile attack on the US Territory of Guam by North Korea. North Korea announced in August that it was preparing plans to fire four missiles near the Guam, and the threats have since continued.

Consul General de Borja thanked Mr. Charfauros for giving the briefing. “We are actually synchronizing our action, our decision, and hopefully it will be delivered efficiently and effectively because of our close coordination with the Office of the Governor and the Office of Civil Defense,” the Consul General said in his opening remarks.

Mr. Charfauros presented on the kinds of ballistic missiles and how the missile defense systems work.  He also said that GHS will use all forms of mass communication to alert the public. These include sounding all 15 All Hazards Alert Warning System sirens located in low-lying areas throughout the island.

GHS has issued a fact sheet in preparing for an imminent missile threat which can be downloaded from its website: http://ghs.guam.gov/

Mr. Charfauros was accompanied during the briefing by GHS Public Information Officer Jenna Blas. END
