10 November 2017 SYDNEY – The Philippine Consulate General in Sydney welcomed participants to the Classroom in the Field (CIF) program of the University of Sydney Medical School / Sydney School of Public Health, ahead of the group’s upcoming study placements in the Philippines.

Consul Marford Angeles, Acting Head of Post, and Consul Emmanuel Guzman met the CIF delegation led by Dr. Giselle Manalo, Sub-Dean International of the Sydney Medical School – University of Sydney, together with other officials and masteral students taking part in the program.

The meeting was an opportunity for the Consulate to brief the participants on Philippine culture and conditions, process travel requirements, and learn more about the CIF program scheduled to take place this December and January.

The CIF program is held in the Philippines over the course of eight to nine weeks, and provides students with a contextual understanding of on-the-ground approaches to international health issues. It gives insights into community-based educational programs and mobilization, the complexities of the Philippine health system, and the implementation of health programs at the national, regional, city, municipal and village levels.

Students are placed at recognized public health institutions such as the Department of Health’s Health Human Resource Development Bureau, University of the Philippines – Manila, the Zuellig Family Foundation, the United Nations Population Fund, and the University of the East -  Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Centre.

Dr. Manalo has been working with the Consulate since the inception of the CIF’s Philippine component in 2013. Former Philippine Consul General to Sydney Anne Jalando-on Louis has also delivered lectures at the Consulate and at the University of Sydney School of Public Health in relation to the program.

The Consulate and Dr. Manalo expressed appreciation for each other’s support, and looked forward to more collaborations with respect to the Classroom in the Field program. END
