21 November 2017 TORONTO — As part of the retooling program of the Philippine Consulate General in Toronto (Toronto PCG), a workshop on Philippine folk dance for its personnel and other attached agencies was conducted at the Consulate’s consular section on November 16.
The workshop was led by a group of three siblings who are renowned in the field of dance and the arts: Dr. Patrick Alcedo, Associate Professor in the Department of Dance of York University; Paolo Alcedo, a professional dancer who trained in EDGE Performing Arts Center in Hollywood, California and danced with numerous dance companies all over Los Angeles, California; and Peter Alcedo Jr., Artistic Director of the University of the Philippines Filipiniana Dance Group, the official dance company of the country’s state university founded in 1935.
Prof. Alcedo started the workshop with a brief introduction on Philippine folk dance. He gave an overview of the origins, development and different forms of Philippine folk dance. He emphasized that “dance is a window into our culture” as well as a “shaper of culture.” He notes that in Canada, “Philippine folk dance is becoming alive again in the diaspora.” The different genres of dance are forms to express and shape their diasporic identities, he adds.
