Chicago’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Welcomes the Participation of the Filipino-American Community

R Chicago McDonald

28 November 2017 CHICAGO — The Philippines was represented for the third time at the annual McDonald’s Thanksgiving Day Parade along State Street in Chicago on November 23.

The Philippine float was decorated like a nipa hut with a big parol with colors of the Philippine flag made by FilAm cultural artist Fred De Asis. The presence of the Philippine group with a traditional fan dance and martial artists in the parade made every Filipino spectator proud. The Philippine’s participation in this prestigious parade is a way of showcasing the country’s rich cultural heritage, history and people to the mainstream viewers who lined up at State Street in the heart of downtown Chicago, or watched the live television broadcast courtesy of WGN 9 Chicago and WGN America.

The McDonald’s Thanksgiving Parade has been going on since 1934. The three-hour parade features giant balloons galore, marching bands, celebrities, floats and more. It is also the second biggest Thanksgiving parade celebration in the United States after the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.

The event was made possible through the invitation of the Chicago Festival Association in partnership with the Consulate General and the Filipino American Council of Greater Chicago (FACC) which hosts Sentro Rizal Chicago. END
