29 November 2017 NEW YORK — The 24-piece Liturgical Vestments Collection designed by Dom Martin Hizon Gomez, OSB, is currently on exhibit at the Lobby of the Philippine Center in New York until December 01.
The vestments are made of intricate and beautiful indigenous textiles of the Philippines and are part of the museum collection of the Transfiguration Abbey in Malaybalay City, Bukidnon. They were brought to New York by Dom Gomez for a two-week exhibition at the Philippine Center.
At the opening of the exhibit held on November 21, Consul General Ma. Theresa B. Dizon-de Vega said that the vestments are examples of the magnificent fusion of the faith and creativity of the artist and bring into focus the indigenous weaves of the different regions of the country.
As part of the exhibition, Dom Gomez held a curatorial talk on November 27 at the venue to share the history and significance of the collection. He discussed his experience in going around the country and meeting different ethno-linguistic groups to learn about their traditional weaving processes and designs which were later incorporated in the vestments he produced. He likewise thanked the different government agencies and NGOs working to promote Philippine textile and design.
Prior to entering the order of Benedictine monks, Dom Gomez was a famous Manila haute couture fashion designer popularly known as Gang Gomez who championed the use Philippine textiles like piña, abaca, jusi, and silk. END
