PHL Consulate General Celebrates ASEAN 50th Anniversary in Los Angeles

21 November 2017 LOS ANGELES — The Philippine Consulate General in Los Angeles led the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of ASEAN at St. Roberts Auditorium, Loyola Marymount University (LMU) in Los Angeles on November 20.

The event was opened by introductory remarks from Dr. Shane Martin, Dean of the School of Education of LMU and welcome remarks by Dr. Thomas Poon, Executive Vice President and Provost of LMU. It was followed by speeches from Consul General Adelio Angelito S. Cruz, Consul General Simon D. I. Soekarno of Indonesia, Consul General Aung Soe Win of Myanmar, Deputy Consul General Kosol Satithamajit of Thailand and Consul Sadat Maad of Malaysia.

Consul General Cruz remarked upon the successes of ASEAN as a regional organization and highlighted the outcome of the Philippine Chairmanship of ASEAN this year. He added, “Despite our diversity, we managed to rise above the barriers of culture, religion and traditions to cultivate regional peace, prosperity and geopolitical stability among our members.”

Consul General Akira Chiba of Japan, Los Angeles City Commissioner Joel Jacinto, Ms. Pleres Choi of the Office of the Deputy Mayor of International Relations and Prof. Edmundo Litton of LMU were among the dignitaries and officials who attended the event.

The celebration, which aimed to promote awareness of ASEAN among students and community members in Los Angeles, presented a spectacle of cultural performances featuring ASEAN traditional dances from Indonesia, Myanmar and the Philippines. Displays were also shown presenting ASEAN food products, textile and native accessories.  More than 150 students and community members from ASEAN countries attended the event. END
