01 December 2017 SAN FRANCISCO — The Philippine Consulate General partnered with the San Francisco-Manila Sister City Committee (SFMSCC) to present “Patterns In Nature,” a solo exhibition of the paintings of Ms. Janine Barrera Castillo at the Kalayaan Hall of the Philippine Center on October 23.

Ms. Castillo was formally educated in the University of the Philippines. While taking up her Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts, majoring in Painting, she won the Jose Joya Annual Painting Contest three times.  She was awarded a scholarship for a Masters in Fine Arts at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, sponsored by the Starr Foundation of New York. She has since relocated to the Bay Area, where she has mounted solo and group exhibits in San Francisco, Oakland, Benicia, Palo Alto, and Napa.

Consul General Henry S. Bensurto, Jr. welcomed the opportunity to present Ms. Barrera-Castillo to the Filipino-American Community in the Bay Area to highlight the talents of Filipinos, and informed the Community of its commitment to “provide the Philippine Center as a platform by which we can promote our culture and our people”, in support of the Consulate’s movement to Spark*Connect*Empower* the Filipino-American Community.

The Consulate had previously partnered with the SFMSCC in presenting world-renowned pianist Dr. Raul Sunico at a concert in the Kalayaan Hall, and continues to engage with the Committee in promoting deeper relations between sister cities Manila and San Francisco.  END
