PH Reaffirms Support for UNIDO and Calls for Constructive Engagement at General Conference

Secretary for Socioeconomic Planning Ernesto M. Pernia delivered the Philippine statement as Head of the Philippine Delegation to the 17th Session of the General Conference of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in Vienna

01 December 2017 VIENNA – Secretary for Socioeconomic Planning Ernesto M. Pernia delivered the Philippine statement as Head of the Philippine Delegation to the 17th Session of the General Conference of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in Vienna at the first plenary session on November 27. The Philippine delegation also included Senior Undersecretary Jesus Cristino Posadas of the Department of Energy, Chair Michael G. Aguinaldo of the Commission on Audit, Ambassador and Permanent Representative Maria Zeneida Angara Collinson, and other officials from COA, NEDA, and the Permanent Mission.

In his statement, he reiterated the Philippines’ full support for UNIDO, noting the contributions of the late Secretary of Foreign Affairs Domingo L. Siazon, Jr., as the first Director-General of UNIDO and the Philippine government’s willingness to engage constructively with UNIDO. He also mentioned the candidature of the Commission on Audit as UNIDO’s External Auditor. The Philippines is expected to be appointed as UNIDO’s External Auditor for the term 01 July 2018 to 31 July 2020.

Secretary Pernia also took the opportunity to meet with other delegations on the sidelines of the General Conference.

UNIDO is the sole UN Specialized Agency in charge of promoting inclusive and sustainable industrial development to eradicate poverty, advance competitive globalization, and promote environmental sustainability. UNIDO has three projects in the Philippines with a combined monetary value of USD 9.60M. END
