06 December 2017 AGANA — The Guam Filipino Artists (GFA), in cooperation with the Philippine Consulate General, kicks off the Christmas season on Guam with the 6th Parol (Christmas Lantern) Making Contest. Submission of entries and judging for the 2017 edition of the contest was held at the Agana Shopping Center on December 03.

Philippine Consulate General Acting Head of Post Consul Mark Francis C. Hamoy joined the panel at the activity, which was attended by mall patrons, participants in the contest, Consulate General staff, and officers and members of the GFA and the Filipino Community of Guam (FCG).

The contest showcased how the traditional Christmas lantern, or parol, can be reinvented using non-traditional, recycled and repurposed materials. As part of the mechanics of the contest, the twenty-seven participants used such materials, including scrap paper and plastic, and indigenous materials such as dried leaves and branches, abaca, tangan-tangan, and the like. They were judged according to creativity and ingenuity in the use of materials, aesthetic appeal, workmanship, and harmony of colors.

The winning lantern was a traditional star made of recycled indigenous materials designed by Edwin Valencia, a tattoo artist, who also won first place in the 2016 contest.
