08 December 2017 HONG KONG – The Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong outlined the government’s infrastructure program at an event organized by the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce (HKGCC) with the attendance by more that 60 business executives on November 30.
During his presentation entitled “Philippines: The Golden Age of Infrastructure,” Acting Head of Post (AHOP) Roderico C. Atienza focused on the country’s high GDP growth and President Rodrigo R. Duterte’s zeal to accelerate infrastructure development under the government’s massive “Build, Build, Build” program.
He emphasized that the Philippines’ infrastructure agenda, especially the development of airports, ports and other transportation facilities, are part of the Philippines’ deliverables to implement regional efforts by the 10 countries of ASEAN.
These projects include the Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity and the recently revived Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asia Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) connectivity initiatives, which include among others the operationalization in April 2017 of the Davao City-General Santos-Bitung, Indonesia roll-on roll-off (RORO) ferry service.
AHOP Atienza further noted that the expanse of infrastructure projects – from Luzon to Mindanao – is evidence of the inclusive growth strategy of the Duterte administration, which also aims to decongest Metro Manila and make development more geographically equitable.
The event also featured Mr. Nicholas Ho, Deputy Managing Partner of Ho & Ho Partners Architects & Development Consultants Ltd., who presented on the “City of Pearl” project in Manila. The initiative is touted as one of the biggest investments under the Belt and Road initiative.
Mr. Behzad Mirzaei, Chairman of HKGCC’s Asia and Africa Committee, moderated the talk, the first on the Philippines under the Chamber’s Belt and Road Series. END
