Philippines Reaffirms Commitment to the Chemical Weapons Convention

12 December 2017 THE HAGUE – The Philippines reaffirmed its commitment to the Chemical Weapons Convention at the 22nd Conference of States Parties of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) held in The Hague, The Netherlands.

In the National Statement delivered by Philippine Permanent Representative to the OPCW, Ambassador Jaime Victor B. Ledda, the country’s efforts to enact domestic laws for the implementation of the CWC, capacity-building, and collaboration among government agencies and other stakeholders were highlighted. With the Philippines as the former Chair of ASEAN, Ambassador Ledda also expressed the Philippine’s hope for an optimistic future of the ASEAN and OPCW relations, and its further enhancement as the OPCW welcomes the new Director-General, Ambassador Fernando Arias of Spain.

The Conference of the States Parties oversees the implementation of the CWC, promotes the treaty’s objectives and reviews compliance with the treaty. The Conference is composed of representatives of all Member States of the OPCW. It meets annually for one week in The Hague.

The Philippine delegation was composed of Ambassador Jaime Victor B. Ledda, Ms. Ma. Theresa M. Alders (Second Secretary and Consul, Philippine Embassy in The Hague), Atty. Florentino Manalastas (Philippine National Authority for CWC/ Anti-Terrorism Council), and Ms. Jenny J. Pelasol (Attaché, Philippine Embassy in The Hague).  END
