PH Participates at the 14th Council Meeting of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)

Capongcol of the Department Energy – Renewable Energy Management Bureau (DOE-REMB) delivers Philippines’ intervention at the fourteenth Meeting of the Council of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) held on November 28 to 29 at Sheraton Hotel, Corniche, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
15 December 2017 ABU DHABI – A Philippine Delegation headed by the Department of Energy – Renewable Energy Management Bureau (DOE-REMB) Director Mylene C. Capongcol attended the 14th Council Meeting of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) on November 28 to 29 at the Sheraton Hotel, Corniche, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
IRENA Director-General Adnan Z. Amin welcomed more than 350 delegates from 115 countries and the European Union to the 14th Council Meeting. Director Amin expressed his appreciation to the growing members of the Agency which attests to IRENA’s relevance in today’s global energy transformation.
Director Amin presented the implementation of the Work Programme and Budget 2016-2017, draft Medium-term Strategy 2018-2022 and proposed Work Programme and Budget for 2018-2019 which was deliberated during the Council. The Council also discussed Programmatic discussions: Increasing the share of renewable energy through the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and Accelerating the energy transition through effective project facilitation, including institutional and administrative matters, and arrangements for the eighth session of the Assembly in January 2018.
During the Council’s discussion of the Proposed Work Programme and Budget for 2018-2019 under C/14/L.4, Director Capongcol delivered Philippines’ intervention.
Director Capongcol said that there is great potential for the Philippines to capitalize on existing initiatives of IRENA and of other Members in adopting policy mechanisms to ensure efficient, reliable and sustainable energy services in the country. Director Capongcol also said that the Philippines appreciates the recent IRENA Mini-Grid Study for renewable energy which was launched during the ASEAN Ministers Meeting in Manila. She added that the Philippines wishes to avail IRENA’s support to sponsor a study on hybrid system to enable the country to adopt and provide cleaner and sustainable energy supply in small and isolated areas nationwide that are currently supplied by conventional and expensive fuel.
