22 December 2017 BUDAPEST – Dr.  Patricia Licuanan, Chairperson of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), led the Philippine delegation at CHED’s Partnership Mission to Hungary last December 11 to 14.

Dr. Licuanan met with Hungary’s Minister of State for Education, Dr. Laszlo Palkovics, at the Ministry of Human Capacities and discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in higher education under the framework of the “Agreement on Educational and Scientific Exchange Programme for the Years 2018, 2019 and 2020.” After their bilateral meeting, PH and Hungary convened the First Joint Working Group Meeting, which was established under the same Agreement.

The Philippine delegation also met with Executive Director Peter Tordai of the Tempus Public Foundation, which manages the Stipendium Hungaricum, a scholarship program which annually provides thirty-five (35) scholarships for Filipinos in Hungary; namely 30 scholarships for BA/BSc or MA/MSc in agriculture & sustainable development, medicine, water management engineering and hydrology, architecture & protection of cultural heritage, natural sciences & environmental studies as well as 5 scholarships for PhD/DLA Studies in any discipline.

There are currently nine (9) scholars under the Agreement, six of whom met with Dr. Licuanan and the Philippine delegation at the Novotel Danube Hotel. The students expressed their appreciation for CHED’s facilitation of their scholarships and shared their actual learning experiences in Hungary. They are encouraging more Filipinos to study in Hungary through the same scholarship programme.

The Philippine delegation visited four (4) institutions of higher education in Hungary; namely Obuda University, Budapest Business School, University of Veterinary Medicine, and Szent Istvan University. The visits facilitated PH and Hungary’s possible linkage and partnerships in higher education, particularly through long-distance research collaborations, exchange of publications, and sharing of best practices.
