22 January 2018 TORONTO — Consul General Rosalita S. Prospero hosted a send-off luncheon on 17 January for the officers of the Filipino Canadian Medical Association (FCMA) of Toronto, Ontario who will be conducting a medical mission in Alitagtag, Batangas, Tacloban City (Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center) and Carcar, Cebu from 18 to 24 February 2018.
FCMA was established in 1985 and has thirty (30) active members. Many of the current officers arrived in Canada in the early 80s as licensed medical doctors in the Philippines who had to go through Canadian examinations and assessments before being allowed to practice in Canada.
For purposes of this visit to the Philippines in February 2018, FCMA members were issued temporary permit to practice medicine by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) for the duration of the humanitarian mission. The Department of Health has also been made aware of the mission.
During the mission, FCMA is able to assist hundreds of patients. They are also allowed to dispense medication which they provide free-of-charge.
In January of 2014, FCMA also visited Palo, Leyte to render assistance to the victims of Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan). END
