26 January 2018 PARIS – Listed as one of the top labor-sending countries in the global arena, the Philippines shared its best practices and challenges in migration data during the International Forum on Migration Statistics (IFMS) 2018 held from 15 to 16 January at the OECD Headquarters in Paris.

The forum was jointly organized by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA).

Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) Deputy National Statistician Josie Perez led the Philippine delegation which included Dr. Maruja M.B. Asis from the Scalibrini Migration Center, Professor Nimfa Ogena of the University of the Philippines Population Institute (UPPI) and Ms. Alcestis Abrera Mangahas, consultant of the Social Weather Stations (SWS).

DNS Perez joined other representatives and statisticians from other countries to share the different country perspectives on the challenges for improving the production and use of migration data. Ms. Ogena and Ms. Mangahas spoke during the parallel sessions to discuss migration measurement and challenges in data collection. Dr. Asis was one of the forum organizers.

“The Philippines will launch the first International Census Survey with the aim of collecting the stock estimates of overseas Filipinos prior to the next population census in 2020. The questionnaire will be distributed to all households nationwide in May and June 2018,” DNS Perez announced during the first plenary session.

Following the implementation of the (1) New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants and the (2) Global Compact for Safety, Orderly and Regularly Migration, the IFMS was organized for the purpose of addressing the on-going effort to fill migration-data gaps and to showcase the most innovative research and initiatives to measure population mobility and generate timely statistics.

The forum likewise aims at creating synergies between stakeholders and perspectives from countries of origin, transit and destination of migrants. END
