Mexico 1

The ASEAN Committee in Mexico City (ACMC) meets with representatives and officials from Mexican government agencies and the private sector in a seminar it co-organized with the Mexican Business Council for Foreign Trade (COMCE).

08 February 2018 MEXICO – The ASEAN Committee in Mexico City (ACMC) held a trade and investment seminar roadshow on 30 January in Mexico City, in cooperation with the Mexican Business Council for Foreign Trade (COMCE).

The ACMC, which is currently chaired by Thai Ambassador Rommanee Kananurak, includes the five resident ASEAN Ambassadors in Mexico, namely: Philippine Ambassador Eduardo A. de Vega, Indonesian Ambassador Yusra Khan, Ambassador Mohamad Azhar bin Mazlan, and Vietnamese Ambassador Nguyen Hoai Duong. (For the above event, the Philippine Embassy was represented by Third Secretary and Vice Consul Mikhal de Dios and Commercial Counselor Vichael Angelo Roaring.)

At the event, the ASEAN Committee spoke directly with COMCE executives, Mexican government officials, and private sector representatives, during which they presented the economic growth of the ASEAN region as a whole, and the investment and trade opportunities of each ASEAN country present at the event.

The Philippine Embassy representatives highlighted the continuous strong growth of the Philippine economy over the better half of the last decade, as well as the current administration’s “Build, Build, Build” initiative.

The Embassy also noted that Philippines-Mexico bilateral trade has grown rapidly in the last few years, reaching over USD 1 billion in value in 2017, up from approximately USD 400 million in 2014. The Embassy officers pointed out that some of the largest Mexican investments outside the American region are found in the Philippines (represented most notably by Coca-Cola FEMSA and Cemex), as evidence of Mexican confidence in Philippine economic development.

The Embassy extended its invitation to Mexican investors and companies to consider the Philippines for their future projects and plans, due to the high quality of life and skilled labor in the country. It also highlighted the Philippines’ growing need for transportation infrastructure and its young, internet-savvy population as additional points of consideration for entrepreneurs and investors.

The Embassy officers also fielded questions on the ease of doing business within ASEAN and the Philippines, and the advantages for third parties that wish to export within the ASEAN Economic Community. END
