15 February 2018 VIENTIANE — The Philippine Embassy in Vientiane held a Singles’ Mixer on 9 February 2018 at the Embassy’s open grounds to foster networking among unmarried members of the Filipino community in Laos, and to discuss laws on relationships and social interactions, particularly between foreigners and Lao nationals.
Ms. Elizabeth Thippawong, Program Management Adviser of the Gender and Development Association (GDA), a non-governmental organization (NGO) in Vientiane, discussed the concept of “consent,” stressed the importance of trust and respect between partners, and reminded participants to confirm with their partners if they approve or are willing to participate in intimate activities. Elizabeth also discussed relevant Lao laws regarding relationships between foreigners and Lao nationals, such as the prohibition against pre-marital sexual relations between foreign and Lao nationals - a crime punishable by imposition of fines and/or imprisonment or deportation (for foreign nationals). She also advised the Filipinos to register with the Office of the Village Chief the names of their house guests, if any, in order to avoid any misunderstandings with Lao police authorities.
The Embassy also conducted Embassy and Overseas Voting (OV) Registration at the sidelines of the event. END
