05 March 2018 DHAKA – The Philippine Embassy in Dhaka, Bangladesh represented by Third Secretary Ms. LV de Guzman and Assistance to Nationals (ATN) Officer Ms. Joany Margallo-Lucas, called on Deputy Minister of Economic Development and concurrent Chairman of the Labor Relations Authority (LRA) Mr. Abdul Rasheed Nafiz on February 27 to discuss matters relating to migrant workers rights and concerns in the Maldives. There are approximately 4,000 overseas Filipino workers in Maldives according to the records of Maldives Immigration as of December 2017.
The Embassy, which was joined by the Philippine Honorary Consul in the Maldives (MPHC) Mr. Abdulla Salih, had proactive discussions with the LRA regarding migrant workers rights in the Maldives, as well as local labor laws and regulations that Filipinos intending to find employment in the Maldives must know before entering into service contracts with companies based in the Maldives. Both sides agreed that a seminar to be held this year focusing on migrant workers’ concerns in the Maldives would be helpful in curbing employment disputes and preventing trafficking cases. The Deputy Minister further expressed openness in having meetings with Philippine officials handling labor and migrant workers concerns in pursuit of closer cooperation and strengthened bilateral relations between the Philippines and the Maldives.
