05 March 2018 TORONTO — To mark women’s month, Consul General Rosalita S. Prospero and Consul Edna May G. Lazaro of the Philippine Consulate General in Toronto participated in the roundtable discussion entitled “Women2Women in the Asia Pacific” organized by the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada on 01 March 2018 at the Omni King Edward Hotel in downtown Toronto.
The roundtable’s aim is to bring together the recommendations and lessons learned arising from a series of consultations and discussions that commenced in September 2017 and had taken place in Vancouver (British Columbia), Regina (Saskatchewan) and Toronto (Ontario). W2W has provided an opportunity for women leaders and entrepreneurs interested in or already operating in Asia to engage with other women leaders who possess knowledge of Asian markets, to learn from their experiences and to share best practices. The series has also identified and connected existing networks of women who can provide peer support, assistance and advice to those launching or expanding their businesses in Asia.
During the “Tour de Table,” Consul General Prospero mentioned that the Philippine government has institutionalized the promotion of women empowerment through its Gender and Development (GAD) Program. She noted that the GAD Program allows the use of a certain percentage of the budget of a government agency for gender mainstreaming. She said that through GAD, the Consulate undertakes activities that address the issues and concerns of Filipino women migrant workers in its areas of jurisdiction. She also mentioned the need to ensure that women are not disadvantaged in the emergence of the innovation economy in the Philippines. END
