06 March 2018 MOSCOW — In celebration of Women’s Month, the Philippine Embassy in Moscow held a workshop on “Philippine Laws on Women” for the Filipino Community. Over 60 participants filled the Embassy ballroom and actively shared their ideas and concerns on burning issues regarding the welfare of Filipina women as workers abroad, single mothers, and breadwinners. The workshop was broadcast live via Facebook and garnered nearly 2,000 views.

Philippine Ambassador to Russia Carlos D. Sorreta gave an overview of the developments towards gender equality in the Philippines and the rights of women. He discussed the Magna Carta for Women, some of the finer points on laws against violence and rape of women, and certain rights of women in the workplace. The participants also engaged in a breakout session led by Vice Consuls Luningning Camoying, Jeffrey Valdez, and Catherine Alpay and the Embassy’s Administrative Officer and Attaché Maria Fe Villapando. During the breakout session, the groups engaged in vigorous discussions on the needs of Filipinas working overseas.

“I was very happy with the output of all participants during the workshop. The discussion was very engaging and the questions very relevant,” commented Ambassador Sorreta. During the Q&A, the Ambassador also remarked, “While there are many Philippine laws already passed for the benefit of women, implementation remains a challenge. This dialogue with Filipinas here in Moscow enriches cooperation and awareness on the progress and future developments needed for Filipina women to truly experience the benefits of which they are entitled.”

The workshop is part of the Embassy’s “Kapihan sa Pasuguan” series for 2018. The next lecture will be featuring issues and concerns for solo parents. END
