PHL Embassy in Bangladesh Meets with Maldives Immigration Officials

Philippine Embassy in Dhaka and the Philippine Honorary Consul to the Maldives discuss migrant workers concerns with Maldives Immigration officials.

09 March 2018 DHAKA - The Philippine Embassy in Dhaka, Bangladesh represented by Third Secretary Ms. LV de Guzman and Assistance to Nationals (ATN) Officer Ms. Joany Margallo-Lucas, called on officials of the Maldives Immigration on February 27 to discuss local labor and immigration laws and practices relating to migrant workers in the Maldives. Maldives Immigration was represented by Assistant Controllers Abdulla Waheed and Hamid Fathuhulla, Chief Principal Immigration Officer Moosa Rameez (Airport Control Section), Chief Principal Immigration Officer Ahmed Waheed (Expatriate Monitoring and Repatriation Service), Chief Principal Immigration Officer Aminath Rasheeda (Foreign Employment and Expatriate Service), and Chief Immigration Officer Ali Saeed (Information Communication Technology).

The Embassy, which was joined by the Philippine Honorary Consul in the Maldives (MPHC) Mr. Abdulla Salih, had proactive discussions with Maldives Immigration regarding migrant workers rights in the Maldives, as well as local labor laws and regulations that Filipinos must know before entering into service contracts with companies based in the Maldives. In order to raise awareness on the Maldives Immigration’s processes and requirements in relation to migrant workers, the Immigration officials expressed interest and willingness in collaborating with the Embassy with respect to the possible conduct of a seminar to be held this year focusing on migrant workers’ concerns in the Maldives. The Assistant Controllers also expressed openness to meeting with Philippine officials handling labor and migrant workers concerns in pursuit of closer cooperation and strengthened bilateral relations between the Philippines and the Maldives.

The Maldives has approximately 4,000 overseas Filipino workers according to the records of Maldives Immigration as of December 2017. END
