PH Consulate General Lauds Workers, Calls On them to Vote in HK in 2019

13 March 2018 HONG KONG – Philippine Consul General in Hong Kong Antonio A. Morales encouraged tens of thousands of Filipino household service workers (HSW) helping prop up both the Philippine and Hong Kong economies at the “Pinoy and Proud” Filipino Community event organized by PLDT Hong Kong on 04 March at Chater Road, Central.
During his remarks, Consul General Morales recognized the contribution of the Filipino workers, whose numbers of 201,000 constitute 54 percent of the 370,000 foreign domestic helpers in Hong Kong, to the Philippines’ economy, which grew by 6.7 percent last year partly thanks to a record high in overseas remittances.
According to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), the Philippines’ central bank, the remittances sent home by overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) reached a record high of US$31.1 billion last year, 5.3 percent higher than in 2016. Hong Kong is one of the 10 top sources of global remittances accounting for 80.1 percent of the total.
Consul General Morales also encouraged the Filcom audience to exercise their right to vote and register for the 2019 Philippine national elections.
The Philippine Consulate General conducted overseas voting registration during the event as part of its campaign for overseas voting. END
