Consul General De Vega Calls on Jersey City Mayor and Council President

22 March 2018 NEW YORK – Consul General Theresa Dizon-De Vega paid a farewell call on Jersey City, New Jersey Mayor Steven Fulop at the Jersey City Townhall on March 19. Joining Mayor Fulop during the call was Jersey City Council President Filipino-American Rolando Lavarro.

Consul General De Vega thanked Mayor Fulop and the Council for their support for the Filipino-American Community in Jersey City, one of the largest in the US Northeast Area. In particular Consul General De Vega cited Jersey City’s efforts to reach out to the Community to relay vital information on policies and programs which impact their lives.

The Jersey City Government has been an active supporter of the Philippine Consulate General’s own efforts to conduct Outreach Missions and Know Your Rights events in the area. The next effort will be a Know Your Rights Seminar organized by the Consulate on March 24 where the Jersey City of Welcoming Communities is again expected to participate.

For his part, Mayor Fulop acknowledged the tremendous contributions made by the Filipino-American Community to the continued vitality of Jersey City, which boasts of having one of the most diverse populations in the state. He likewise expressed a desire to see closer cooperation through possible twinning agreements in the future.

Council President Rolando Lavarro, who will serve as the Grand Marshal of the 2018 Philippines-US Friendship Parade in June, assured the Consul General of the continued active support of the Council for the Filipino-American Community. END
