Filipino Fashion Designer, Alberto Barros, Wins the FOMA Designer of the Year Award in Sydney

02 April 2018 SYDNEY — Mr. Alberto Barros, a Sydney based Filipino couture designer emerged as the winner of the Fashions of Multicultural Australia (FOMA) Designer of the Year Award held at Nanda/Hobbs Gallery in Sydney on March 10.
FOMA is a first-ever national initiative that integrates cultures and creates social cohesion through the universally binding industry that is fashion. With a huge participation from foreign embassies and consulates that included designers from around the world, the FOMA runway show featured 120 looks from 13 designers. The show featured contemporary and traditional collections from African, Brazilian, Christmas Island, Indigenous, Filipino, Indian, Lebanese, Portuguese, Peruvian, Turkish and Vietnamese designers
Alberto Barros’ designs were influenced by his traditional Filipino household surrounded by traditional mastery and the art of handmade crafts. His focus on quality and the value of making garments not just as art but as an heirloom, is driven by the values of his Filipino heritage
Consul General Nina Cainglet of the Philippine Embassy in Canberra, Acting Head of Post, Melanie Rita B. Diano of the Philippine Consulate General in Sydney, Tourism Attache Norjamin Delos Reyes and Ms. Jean Guzman, wife of Consul Emmanuel Guzman of Sydney PCG attended the event to show support to Mr. Barros. The Philippine Embassy, Philippine Consulate and DOT-Sydney facilitated the participation of Mr. Barros to FOMA. END
