6 December 2013 – The Philippine Embassy in Riyadh hosted the scholarship examination of the Overseas Workers’ Welfare Administration (OWWA) for 84 children of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) on December 04. The 84 senior high school students who took the exam belong to the upper 20 percent of their classes from various Philippine Overseas School in Riyadh took the OWWA scholarship examinations under the OWWA Education for Development Scholarship Program (EDSP). Ms. Josefina A. Fernandez of the Department of Science and Technology administered the examinations.
Under the Program, a scholar is given 60,000 Philippine pesos annually to defray education-related expenses at the university of the scholar’s choice. According to Welfare Officer Romeo Pablo, the Program does not prescribe any course preference. However, a condition for the scholarship is thtat the student must maintain a general average of 80%.
Thirty one (31) male students took the examinations as against their female counterparts of 53 or 37 to 63 percent ratio.
