Filipino Students Win Team Juniors Gold at International Mathematics Competition in Vietnam

05 April 2018 HANOI — A group of Filipino eighth grade students representing various schools in the Philippines recently competed at the 15th Hanoi Open Mathematics Competition (HOMC) held from 26 to 30 March in Hanoi, Vietnam.

The HOMC, which was organized by the Hanoi Department of Education and Training and the Hanoi People's Committee, featured around 500 participants from the Philippines, China, Indonesia, Hungary, Malaysia, Myanmar, Poland, Thailand and Vietnam.

Among the students who represented the Philippines were Annika Angela Mei Tamayo (Ateneo de Iloilo), Justin Teng Soon Khoo (Regional Science High School III), Gwyneth Margaux Tangog (Southville International School and Colleges), William Joshua King (Bethany Christian School).  The students were accompanied by Dr. Isidro Aguilar, President of the Mathematics Trainers Guild Philippines (MTG), and Mr. Renard Eric Chua, team trainer.

During the competition, the team won the gold medal for the juniors division-team category while several members won the bronze medal for the juniors division-individual category.

Second Secretary and Consul Dean Jason Arriola attended the closing ceremony on behalf of the Philippine Embassy in Hanoi and congratulated the team for their remarkable performance and for proudly representing the Philippines during the course of the competition. END
