Historian and professor Danilo Madrid Gerona, Ph.D. delivers a lecture on Ferdinand Magellan and the European Discovery of the Philippines

LISBON 17 April 2018 – Noted Filipino historian Danilo Madrid Gerona delivered a lecture “Ferdinand Magellan and the European Discovery” at the Philippine Embassy in Lisbon on 11 April 2018.

“The lecture is part of the Philippine Embassy’s Magellan Lecture Series with the objective of fostering relations between the Philippines and Portugal in the fields of art, culture and education, we do this by inviting academic scholars to discuss and share their historical perspectives on the Portuguese navigator, Ferdinand Magellan and his journey to the Philippine islands,” Ambassador Celia Anna M. Feria said.

Dr. Gerona who specializes in pre– and Spanish colonial period accounts delivered his lecture based on his book, “Ferdinand Magellan, The Armada de Maluco and the European Discovery of the Philippines.” The 500-page book is rooted on primary document sources from Spanish and Portuguese manuscripts which he researched for 10 years.

Ambassador Feria said Dr. Gerona enlightened the audience by presenting various revelations and theories that challenges the various historical facts not only about Magellan and the circumstances surrounding his journey to the Philippines but also about the nature and character of chieftain Lapu-Lapu, and the natives during that time period.

The lecture was attended by guests from the Portuguese academe and members of the Filipino community particularly the youth. END
