Philippine Embassy in Prague Chargé d’affaires, a.i. Juan E. Dayang, Jr. presents the Philippine statement at the ECOSOC Preparatory Meeting in Prague, Czech Republic.

PRAGUE 19 April 2018 – The Philippine Embassy in Prague, Czech Republic presented the Philippines’ proposals in achieving the Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goals during the preparatory meeting of the United Nations (UN) Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) at the Cernin Palace in Prague on 26 March.

Agenda 2030 is touted as the most ambitious set of 17 goals and 169 underpinning targets set by the UN member states in September 2015.  It is a follow-up to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The theme of the ECOSOC Presidency of the Czech Republic was “towards sustainable, resilient and inclusive societies through participation of all.”

The Philippines presented its proposals aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals Agenda 2030 at the meeting session “Open Presentation of Participatory Projects and Discussion” moderated by Ms. Catherine Pollard, UN Under-Secretary General for General Assembly and Conference Management.

“The Philippines has strong engagements with all stakeholders in developing laws and policies. Extensive consultations were made with all sectors of society and all levels of government to formulate Ambisyon 2040, the Philippine vision for sustainable development,” said Chargé d’affaires, a.i. Juan E. Dayang, Jr. during his intervention.

He also expressed that the Philippines is currently using web-based applications as a way of achieving the SDGs. 

“The Philippines looks forward to working closely with the Czech Republic, especially on issues of particular interests to the Philippines such as poverty eradication, climate change, migration, financing for development, illicit financial flows and stolen assets, international trade, Overseas Development Assistance, South-South Cooperation, and peace and security,” he said.

The meeting in Prague aimed to highlight the role of citizen participation, good governance and inclusive institutions in achieving the SDGs.  More than 60 countries were represented during the said meeting.

The aim of the Prague meeting was to highlight the role of citizens’ participation, good governance and inclusive institutions in achieving the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs. This is the main theme of the Czech Republic’s ECOSOC Presidency. The Czech Republic was elected as President of ECOSOC in July 2017 for a period of one year.

An ECOSOC special session will take place at the UN Headquarters in New York on 23 May. END
