SHANGHAI 30 April 2018 – The Philippine Consulate General in Shanghai and the Department of Tourism organized the Philippine Week at the Soong Ching Ling School (SCLS) on 16 to 22 April.

The opening ceremony was held at the 600-seat school theater with opening remarks by Ms. Feng Lirong, SCLS Executive Principal, and Mr. Wilfredo Cuyugan, Consul General of the Philippines.  After the speeches, a well-executed rendition of the children’s song Bahay Kubo was presented by the primary school children in the audience, to the delight and amazement of the Consulate.

Tourism Attaché Irineo Reyes then presented an introduction to the Philippines and invited the children to answer questions based on his presentation in exchange for gifts from DOT.

A 30-minute performance by the Sindaw Philippines Performing Arts Guild showcased songs and dances from north to south of the Philippines.  After the ceremony, a lunch of adobo, sinigang, barbecue and atchara was served to all students and guests at the school’s cafeteria.

An interaction between the students and the Sindaw group was held in the afternoon, with the group teaching tinikling and itik-itik to the children.

Established in 2008, SCLS in the Qingpu District of Shanghai is considered one of the leading primary and middle schools in China. It has a population of over 1,200 students in grades 1 to 9, mainly from prominent local Chinese and expatriate families.

The Philippine Consulate General in Shanghai has been engaging schools in Shanghai for its public diplomacy program in order to bring a positive awareness of the Philippines to the younger generation of China. END
