DILI 02 May 2018 – Philippine Ambassador to Timor-Leste Abdulmaid K. Muin called on Dr. Rui Maria de Araujo, Minister of Health of Timor-Lesteon at the Palasiu Sinza in Caicoli, Dili on 24 April 2018.

The two officials discussed how to further strengthen the bilateral cooperation of Timor-Leste and the Philippines in the field of health.

Minister de Araujo noted that upon assuming his new post in the second half of 2017 from his previous position as Prime Minister of the last government, he instructed his subordinates to look at how the Philippines could fit in into Timor-Leste’s aim of enhancing its health care system.

A number of Filipino doctors and Timorese doctors who studied in the Philippines, he said, are working in various government hospitals in the districts outside of Dili, the capital city. Minister de Araujo said that they would like to see the Philippines as a destination for Timorese medical scholars under a government-to-government arrangement.

The Timorese Ministry of Health is now looking into Philippine medical schools where they could send Timorese students to study hospital management, human resource managements, and specialization courses for medical practitioners.

The Philippines and Timor-Leste are in the process of negotiating a bilateral agreement on health cooperation which will include a provision on hosting in the Philippines of Timorese medical scholars. END
