DILI 02 May 2018 — Philippine Ambassador to Timor-Leste Abdulmaid K. Muin, paid a courtesy call on Dr. Manuel Vong, Minister of Tourism of the Republic of Timor-Leste, at the Ministry of Culture in Dili on 20 April 2018.

The discussion featured the status of cultural cooperation between the Philippines and Timor-Leste, and the preparations for the upcoming cultural activities relative to the commemoration of the Philippine Independence in June 2018.

Minister Vong noted the cultural and historical parallels between the Philippines and Timor-Leste. He expressed his hope that both parties could further enhance cooperation in the field of tourism and culture.

Dr. Vong said that Timor-Leste could learn from the Philippine experience in promoting sustainable tourism and religious tourism. Timor-Leste, like the Philippines, boasts of white sand beaches, diving sites, and a festive, European-influenced culture. Timor-Leste was a former Portuguese colony for more than 500 years.

For his part, Ambassador Muin conveyed the readiness of the Philippines in helping the Timorese Tourism Ministry develop its capabilities in tourism promotion and management. The Ambassador said that the Philippine Embassy will coordinate with Philippine tourism officials to implement bilateral cooperation activities with Timor-Leste in the field of tourism. END
