PH Embassy in Lisbon Hosts Hibla ng Lahing Filipino Travelling Exhibition
LISBON 05 May 2018 — A Avó Veio Trabalhar (Grandma came to Work) visited the Hibla ng Lahing Filipino Travelling Exhibition at the Philippine Embassy in Lisbon. It is composed of elderly ladies above 65 years old who combine their product design with traditional knowledge in doing crafts. It is an initiative under the umbrella of Female 2 Female Project of Recreart Creative. The Portuguese guests were delighted with the embroidery exercise that highlights the unique artwork, creativity and skill of the Filipino embroiderers and weavers. Recreart Creative is a private institution which was co-founded by Ms. Susana Antonio from Brazil. Its aim is to help local projects, small business and startups to amplify their visibility through bold and innovative strategies, engagement and communication tools. The Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas (Faculty of Social and Human Sciences - FCSH) of the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (NOVA) in Lisbon, Portugal visited the Hibla ng Lahing Filipino Travelling Exhibition at the Philippine Embassy in Lisbon. FSCH is an organic unit of the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (NOVA) and according to its statutes, “the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of NOVA University of Lisbon is an institution dedicated to education, scientific research and cultural creation." During the visit to the Embassy, FSCH officials met with Ambassador Celia Anna M. Feria and discussed the revival of the University’s existing agreement with Ateneo de Manila University. Asian studies students of the Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa) visited the Hibla ng Lahing Filipino Traveling Exhibition at the Philippine Embassy in Lisbon on 27 April. Philippine Ambassador to Portugal Celia Anna M. Feria (2nd to the right) welcomed the ULisboa Asian Studies students to the Embassy and guided them through the various segments of the Exhibition. She also explained to them the historical importance and contemporary influence of the Piña (pineapple) and silk fibers on the clothing culture of the Philippines. She hoped there will be future collaborations with the ULisboa Asian Studies students in helping promote Philippine arts and cultural heritage through academic seminars and forums.

The students appreciated the active and authentic learning experience at the Embassy stating that their visit to the exhibition complemented their current subject on Southeast Asia which is presently focused on the Philippines with the study of the lives of Philippine national heroes, Dr. Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio and their impact on the country’s nation-building and identity.
