New Consul General in Guangzhou Meets FilCom Leaders

Consul General Louis M. Alferez discusses cooperative activities with the Filipino community leaders in Guangzhou.

GUANGZHOU 04 May 2018 – Newly-arrived Consul General Marshall Louis M. Alferez met with Filipino community leaders in Guangzhou on 20 April. The meeting was an opportunity for the Consul General to introduce himself and to exchange views on various issues of relevance to the local Filipino community. The leaders were members of the executive committee of FilCom GZ, the umbrella organization of Filipino organizations in Guangzhou.

Consul General Alferez briefed the community on various activities and plans of the consulate general, as well as on local developments in the Philippines. FilCom GZ President Mr. Glenn Silangan welcomed Consul General Alferez on behalf of the community, and gave a briefing on the structure of the community and their upcoming projects. Present at the meeting were officials of the Association of Filipinos in Footwear Industry, Couples for Christ, Proctor and Gamble Filipino Families; Filipino Teachers Association of Guangzhou; and the Filipino Camera Enthusiasts of Guangzhou.

After the meeting, Consul General Alferez swore in the new officers of the Filipino Teachers Association of Guangzhou.

There are an estimated 5,000 Filipinos under the jurisdiction of the Consulate General, which includes the provinces of Guangdong, Hunan, Guangxi and Hainan. More than 80% of them are in the province of Guangdong, especially in the major cities of Guangzhou and Shenzhen. They mostly employed as executives, managers and teachers. END
