PH Embassy in Brunei Holds Philippine Cultural Fair

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN 08 May 2018 – The Philippine Embassy in Brunei Darussalam, in collaboration with Freshco Management, held a Philippine Cultural Fair at the Freshco Shopping Center atrium in Batu Satu, Bandar Seri Begawan from 27 to 29 April 2018. The three-day fair featured Philippine cuisine, traditional attire, such as the barong tagalog, and woven textiles such as the jusi and piña, t’nalak, yakan and sinamay.

A live cooking demonstration of Filipino cuisines, chicken adobo and fresh lumpia, by Cocina de Lola, the only halal Filipino restaurant in Brunei, was held in the afternoon of the 28th and 29th April 2018. Cocina de Lola also showcased PHL native delicacies including kakanin (biko, cassava cake, maja blanca, kutsinta, puto, sapin-sapin), tapsilog.

The Embassy invited Filipino entrepreneurs in Brunei to display and vend items in the booth during the three-day event. Philippine-made products featured by the entrepreneurs include the Philippine barong, sungka, Philippine Islands souvenir shirts, and delicacies such as polvoron, dried mangoes, mamon, and PHL ice cream (FIC and Magnolia) among others.

The aim of the Philippine Cultural Fair is to introduce the taste and tradition of the Philippines to the Bruneians as well as to provide an opportunity for people from the Philippine community to come together, share and celebrate its culture. Said Fair serves as an avenue for the Embassy to strongly promote Filipino culture, food, and arts in Brunei Darussalam. END

The Philippine Cultural Fair showcased woven materials such as the banig, t’nalak and sinamay fabrics as well as the PHL barong made of jusi and piña. Other decorative items highlighting indigenous materials such as capiz, nito, and bamboo, were also featured. The well-known Philippine ice cream, Magnolia and FIC, selling ube, avocado and queso flavors, among others, were a favorite among the Bruneians who visited the Fair.
