UN Secretary General Visits IMO, Meets with Ambassadors, High Commissioners

LONDON 08 May 2018 — United Nations Secretary General António Guterres recently visited the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) in London and met with ambassadors, high commissioners and permanent representatives of IMO Member States.

Philippine Ambassador Antonio M. Lagdameo were among those who joined IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim in greeting the Secretary General upon his arrival.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Guterres highlighted the important contribution of the IMO towards ensuring high standards in shipping in order to ensure safety, security, efficiency, and environmental protection. He cited in particular the recent adoption by IMO of an Initial Strategy on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from ships, and acknowledged it as a major step forward in combatting climate change.

Mr. Guterres also congratulated IMO on its 70th anniversary. The IMO is the United Nations specialized agency with responsibility for ship safety, maritime security and prevention of pollution from ships. END
