WASHINGTON, D.C. 15 May 2018 – Pork sisig will take center-stage when the Philippines takes part in the Embassy Chef Challenge in Washington D.C.
Restaurant veteran Chef Abie Sincioco-Mateo will represent the Philippine Embassy in the 10th edition of Washington’s leading culinary event at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center on 17 May. She will be presenting pork sisig, a popular Filipino dish made of grilled hash pork face, which will be paired with San Miguel Pale Pilsen.
“I’m honored and excited to represent the Philippines in the Embassy Chef Challenge in its milestone year. Great attention is finally being paid to Filipino food in the United States and I hope to help keep this positive momentum going and further enlarge the international support base for Philippine cuisine,” said Sincioco-Mateo, who will be competing with chefs from more than 25 other diplomatic missions.
This is the third time that the Philippine Embassy is joining the Embassy Chef Challenge. In 2016, Chef Claude Tayag’s bringhe bagged the People’s Choice Award while Chef Red Garcia introduced guests to binalot, the “Filipino lunch box,” in 2017. Award-winning mixologist Enzo Lim (2016) and bartender Jojo Valenzuela (2017) served up special cocktails to pair with the dishes.
“Being a part of this annual gastro-diplomacy extravaganza allows us to not only promote our nation’s unique dishes but also contribute to the multi-cultural heritage of Washington, D.C.,” said Ambassador Jose Manuel G. Romualdez.
“We sincerely thank the Trade Center Management Associates (TCMA) and all of the partner organizations for continuing to provide this high-profile platform through which to conduct our cultural diplomacy,” Ambassador Romualdez added.
The Philippine Embassy's participation in the 10th Embassy Chef Challenge is made possible through the generous support of Datu Puti, Tito Al’s Choice, and the US-Philippines Society. END
