JEDDAH 21 May 2018 – The Philippine Consulate General in Jeddah recently came to the assistance of around 70 Filipino workers who have been stranded in Saudi Arabia for the last two months while awaiting full settlement of their unpaid salaries and other benefits from their company.
Consul General Edgar Badajos, together with Consul Rodney Jonas L. Sumague and Welfare Officer James Mendiola, visited the camp of a major Saudi contracting company where the Filipino workers have been housed and distributed food packs to them on 16 May.
“The company has fallen into dire financial straits recently, giving rise to a number of labor problems with its workers, which include a substantial number of Filipino workers,” Consul General Badajos said.
Consul General Badajos also updated the Filipino workers on the status of their repatriation and release of their unpaid salaries and benefits. Through the efforts of the Consulate General, the company and the Philippine recruitment agency of the workers, provided plane tickets to some of the workers, he said.
Consul General Badajos said 25 workers are scheduled to be repatriated on 20 May and five more on 21 and 22 May. The management of the company also issued an affidavit of undertaking indicating the company’s commitment to fully settle the monetary claims of the workers on a monthly installment basis starting August of this year until January 2019.
